Today Melissa, of New Girl on Post fame, is sharing some of the tips that help her produce her absolutely stunning photographs. Colby is definitely the photographer in our little family, but I've been trying to improve my composition and photo-taking skillz. This is the perfect post to help me become a photo ninja on our vacation and overwhelm Colby with my far superior photography prowess. Not that it's a competition or anything...
First of all, I just wanted to say a big thank you to Angela for so graciously letting me be a guest blogger while she's gone on her big adventure. It's always fun to guest blog for someone whose blog you really enjoy reading.
I knew I wanted to use my guest blog to talk about travel, but I was a bit stuck on what I wanted part of travel I wanted to talk about. Dream vacation? My favorite places? Travel tips? Finally I decided that I'd combine my love of photography with my love of travel in one post.
Here is my list of tips for Travel Photography:
1. Before you travel, do a Google image search or search on Flickr for some images of the city you are traveling to. If there are famous landmarks there, such as the Eiffel Tower, Big Ben, etc... Look up those too. Take note of what some of your favorite angles are in the pictures and try to find some out of the way places in the city you didn't know about to go take pictures in.
2. With a famous landmark, many peoples' pictures end up looking the same. Look for an interesting angle or position that not many other people have thought of.
3. If you plan on taking night shots, take a tripod. Trust me on this one. Your night shots will be ten times better if you just use a tripod. No, it doesn't have to be a fancy schmancy one either. Mine came from Wal-Mart and it works just fine. My tripod helps get me blur-free shots like this one:
4. Although capturing landscapes is important when you travel, don't forget to take pictures of the people too. I always find it interesting to look at travel photos of people, especially in the more remote locations of the world. It gives me a better understanding of what it's like to travel there.
5. Take pictures of the little details, sometimes those end up being your most interesting shots. Don't forget to shoot your hotel room, plates of food you order, modes of transportation, street signs, window displays and the other day to day things that make a city or area what it is.

I love tips 4 & 5. I never think to take shots of locals. Brilliant. They would HAVE to convey the feel of a city! And detail shots are such fun too. Sometimes when I'm on a trip there are so many amazing moments that it becomes brain overload. Snapping a quick shot would keep all those memories fresh - and not just the ones at the end (which tends to happen to me).
